Now, in his first-ever public comments about the 1971 crime, the 76-year-old former Sunday school teacher says he is waiting to be reunited with them in the hereafter. The Broadduses and the List sagas did not overlap quite as closely as they do in the show. List lived on 431 Hillside Avenue, a 19-room Victorian mansion in Westfield, located two miles from 657 Boulevard.

While he was there, several acquaintances of his were home dialing the hotline “America’s Most Wanted” had set up to take leads phoned in by viewers. They recognized their quiet friend and neighbor as the same man who had brutally killed his family years before. "I've always heard about it," said Kevin Kessler, 14, who lives across from a new house on the property. The new house, though, is still called "the List house" in town. "Kids talk about the crazy guy who killed his family then disappeared, and then the house burned down. I know kids who say they would never live on this street because of it."

All anyone has to do is read their looks, if not their lips. You can't have a White House Correspondents' Dinner without a host, and this year, emcee Colin Jost is expected to arrive with his wife, Scarlett Johansson, for moral support before taking the stage. Rachel Brosnahan of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fame will join CNN's entourage on Saturday, April 27, as she prepares to enter the DC Comics Universe with her starring role as journalist Lois Lane in the 2025 Superman reboot. Newly minted Oscar winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph will join in the weekend festivities as another of ABC News' A-list guests.
Even given the flood of dead-end tips in the immediate aftermath of the murders and following the 1989 "America's Most Wanted" episode, investigators soon learned that Flanery's information was the real deal. According to NJ.com, FBI agents who looked into "Bob Clark" of Richmond, Virginia soon realized that they had finally found the murderer. While in custody, he attempted to convince authorities that he was Bob Clark. Yet, he eventually confessed to a shocked and heartbroken Delores that he really was John List. Per ABC News, his body was riddled with bullets, having possibly resisted his death.

In this time period he carried out 144 of his designs, 103 of which are still standing. Records show that during the couple’s 15-year ownership of the home, its valuation for property tax purposes changed three times. One of those changes was a decrease in 2023 to the current amount of $2,049,000, which includes a state homestead/disability exemption of $46,400. The home was built in 1923 and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. However, only a gatehouse and a small studio were actually built. By killing his family, he hoped to spare them shame, save their souls, and guarantee they could all spend the afterlife together. He chose not to commit suicide because he considered it a sin. A couple of sources claim that the ornate house contained a skylight made of Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass valuable enough to bail List out of his financial problems. But in a pre-Antiques Roadshow world, he didn’t think to get an appraisal and try to sell the glass — if it really existed, that is. By 1971, List seemed poised for a total financial collapse and didn’t want his wife and kids to bear the shame of going on public assistance. On May 21, 1989, the List family murders were featured in an episode of America’s Most Wanted, and law enforcement immediately began receiving calls—none were helpful.
"What kind of man are you, that you killed your mother, your wife, and your children, and then assume another identity and marry another woman who has no idea who you are?" he asked. As he drove List to the police station, August couldn't resist asking the killer why he had committed the unconscionable murders. The List family murders horrified the wealthy town of Westfield, casting a dark cloud over its residents that still persists to this day. Dave Devlin, who lived a couple of doors down from the List family, recalled John mowing his lawn in a full suit and tie in an interview with the podcast hosts, award-winning journalists Rebecca Everett and Jessica Remo. List's murders remain one of the most shocking cases of the 1970s, and the legacy of his crimes lives on to this day. Seventeen years after the crime investigators still had nothing to go on in case but dead ends.
She has apologized repeatedly, though at times Boebert seems less than contrite. Worse, from a political standpoint, the off-color episode raised doubts about Boebert’s judgment and impetuous nature, and badly undermined her image as a family-minded conservative and devout Christian. Lauren Boebert was preaching to the faithful, prowling the stage of a megachurch and delivering a sermon — filled with Scripture and references to Christ and Satan — taken straight from the Book of Grievance. One of the four textile block Wright houses in this pre-Columbian-inspired style in the Los Angeles area, the Storer House is unique because of its four-block designs. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and has been listed as a California Historical Landmark and as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
In 1971, 46-year-old John List lost his job at a New Jersey bank. List couldn’t bear to tell his family about the loss of income — so he just kept pretending to go to work each morning. As John recently told an interviewer on the TV program 20/20, he thought the actions he was about to partake in would save the souls of his family. His belief was that if his home was foreclosed upon the family would split up and turn away from the church. On November 9, 1971, John put what was a carefully calculated plan into action. A few weeks before he had ordered a family meeting where he cryptically asked them each what type of funeral they would want.
Created by Ryan Murphy and based on a 2018 New York Magazine story, the show follows a family of four when their dream home becomes a nightmare, as they begin receiving creepy letters from someone called The Watcher. The mysterious, menacing figure drives the couple (played by Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale) to paranoia, as they begin to suspect all of their neighbors and even each other. List was eventually convicted and given five consecutive life sentences on May 1, 1990 (via NJ.com). He would spend the next 18 years — as much time as he had been free following the murders — in prison before his death from pneumonia in 2008. His body was cremated, and the ashes were claimed by an unidentified person that same year. Cemetery workers confirmed that List's ashes were not interred alongside his mother's remains in Michigan.
Both List and Graff also cut themselves out of family photos and left after turning on all the lights in the house and playing organ music. While the true story of 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, is enough of a draw, Murphy and the creative team also pulled inspiration from another true crime tale. The series' third episode introduces the story of John Graff (Joe Mantello), a former owner of the house who had his own lethal history. Read on to learn what we know about the Graff character's connection to a real 1971 family massacre. John List was supposed to be a financially successful paterfamilias, yet he was a professional dud. Yet, as "Death Sentence" notes, the stately home was hard on the List finances.
Though List had two sons rather than Graff's one, both the real man and the character had a 16-year-old daughter named Patricia. As ABC News reports, he hadn't even taken a plane — the car at JFK was a red herring. Instead, he traveled by land and assumed the name of "Robert P. Clark." Though he worked for a time as a cook, he eventually fell into old habits, finding a job as an accountant and attending a Lutheran church. Inside the mansion's cavernous ballroom, the bodies of List's wife Helen, 46, and his three children Patricia, 16, John, 15, and Frederick, 13, were laid out on the floor on sleeping bags. List saw the children off to school and then shot her in the kitchen as she sipped her usual morning coffee.
Though John would move Helen's body to the house's ballroom (leaving a gruesome trail of blood), Alma proved to be too heavy. As for the other children, any step outside their father's rules was cause for punishment. In the summer of 1971, when Patty was held at the local police station after officers caught her and a friend wandering the town at night, John List's reaction spoke volumes. According to "Death Sentence," he saw his daughter's presence in the police station as both a symptom of her growing rebellion and a portent of where her actions would take her. Sixteen-year-old Patty was talking about being an actor, for one. She also once wore a shirt that proclaimed "Make Love, Not War," such an offensive statement that John ripped the shirt off his daughter while screaming at her.

Dark colors, often misunderstood, hold a profound psychological impact that can transform the perception of interior environments. That’s why adding warm light sources is so important, especially when a room has little to no natural light. At times, an all-dark-toned interior design can be a bit too overwhelming, regardless of you being a huge fan of it. Paint the door of the room black or the window’s trim or the mantelpiece should be painted in a dark shade while coating the walls in a lighter tone.

Since they’re easy to clean, tiles are ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. If an entire room covered in dark tiles is too much, only use them for a focal point, such as the shower, stovetop backsplash, or office feature wall. When it comes to lighting a darkly decorated room, it goes without saying that you should avoid anything too bright. Choose shades that cast a warm light – drum shades lined in gold or copper work best for keeping the light low and luxurious.
Mix black walls with gold accents
Using dark colors in specific areas or as accent walls can also help to create depth without overwhelming the space. A feature wall is an obvious choice, but feature walls can look a bit blah, especially with a dark color because it will look so stark against white walls. So instead of a feature wall, paint a feature ceiling in a deep hue. See how this dark living room still feels very neutral and fresh with crisp white walls and pale wooden furniture but the dark ceiling brings the drama without totally overwhelming the room. When you first think of dark interior design, perhaps you go to very dark harsh colors like blacks and charcoals and really deep navy blues, but moodier interiors aren't all about those striking cooler tones. For a much softer, cocooning take on the look, Abigail recommends, looking to the warmer side of the color wheel, and experimenting with hues that have a more natural, earthy feel.
If you can't part with your neutral walls, add deeper tones on the floor. If you have wooden floors, paint them in a darker color to contrast those pale walls and take the color onto the woodwork too, as seen in this dark living room, for a really cohesive look. If you don't have wooden floors or don't want to commit to painting them, try a larger area rug in a dark color or pattern for a similar effect. A dark house interior design trick that’s equally clever and attractive is painting the walls and furniture the same color. Firstly, it shifts focus from especially bulky pieces like bookshelves. And secondly, it makes spaces seem more open and less cluttered since the furniture blends into the backdrop.
But if it’s too much, only a specific wall or a ceiling will do the job, creating the illusion of night time when it is a day – echoing the darkness of night time in a day. 'The beauty of painting everything in a room the same color is that it works for any style and size of room, and for any country and location. Painting the ceiling the same color as the walls scares people the most, but it’s the most game-changing thing that you can possibly do, particularly if you go for inky mid-tone colors. This is because you can’t tell where the walls stop and the ceiling begins, so the walls feel taller.' explains Abigail.
The studio clad the walls, floors and ceilings of the space in wooden panels that were stained jet black. You'll usually find her attempting DIY, whether it's spray painting her whole kitchen, don't try that at home, or ever changing the wallpaper in her hallway.
Plus it's the perfect finish for all surfaces so you can blend features together so you can nail that seamless, all-over look that Abigail recommends experimenting with. By taking shades that sit opposite each other on the wheel, such as orange and blue, you can create a rich, vibrant scheme packed with drama and energy. These daringly dark living room ideas will help you brighten your dark space and have you reaching for the paint chart. “Lamps with shades, frosted glass, or pierced metal offer diffused light which contribute to the moody vibe,” says Deborah Bettcher, principal designer at Decorating Den Interiors. When it comes to bedroom ideas, toning things down and going to the dark side will transform the ambiance of your space.
Navy blue is a great dark colour for those who do not wish to go for a radically different colour. In dark interiors, opt for warmer tones to enhance coziness and prevent the space from feeling too stark. Layered lighting, combining ambient, task, and accent lighting, allows for flexibility and control, enabling you to highlight architectural features or decor elements.
Group in odd numbers – three is a great place to start – to create harmony and visual interest. It provides a clear and instant visual for exactly which hues contrast and coordinate, to help you to devise harmonious, tonal or contrasting looks. Founded by Salazar Slytherin, Slytherin House beckons those whose ambition knows no bounds and whose cunning minds are adept at navigating the intricacies of the magical world.
The Hogwarts House Quiz is a one-of-a-kind, unconventional personality test that will perfectly place you in one of the four houses. The Harry Potter House quiz is significantly different from any other quiz you can find. According to many magicians, this quiz is much more thorough and charming than the one in Pottermore. Hufflepuff is where you will find the most trustworthy and hardworking students. In fact, out of all the houses Hufflepuff has produced the least number of dark witches and wizards. The badger is the symbol of this house, the colours are yellow and black, the Head of House is Professor Pomona Sprout and the common room can be found near the kitchens in Hogwarts.
The Slytherin common room, situated beneath the Black Lake, exudes an aura of sophistication. Adorned in green and silver, it becomes a crucible for future leaders and influencers. The common room echoes with discussions on power, strategy, and the pursuit of one's ambitions. Within these walls, Slytherins forge alliances that extend beyond the boundaries of Hogwarts, forming networks that will shape the wizarding world's future.
There is a great legend that Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor got into a big duel prior to him leaving the school. According to Pottermore, Salazar was very skilled at Legilimency (reading minds) and was also the first recorded parselmouth (can talk to snakes). Salazar Slytherin was said to have valued those who were cunning, had great ambition, and were pure of blood. In a video on his Youtube channel, Stephen Colbert revealed that JK Rowling messaged him and told him that he belongs in Ravenclaw. He added that Rowling told him that he has undertones of Gryffindor but is a Ravenclaw. A popular fan theory is that Rowena is responsible for giving the school the name of ‘Hogwarts’.
The symbolic animal is a snake, and the representative colors are green and silver. Severus Snape, Horace Slughorn, Draco Malfoy, Tom Riddle, and other outstanding wizards all graduated here. When selecting students, pure blood is one of the factors for Slytherin selection, but it is not the only criterion. Muggle-born Slytherin students do exist, but they are quite rare.

One day, Harry receives a letter informing him that he has a place in Hogwart’s School. This is no ordinary school and is a place where witches and wizards go to learn magic. While there, Harry meets lots of interesting people, and makes many new friends. Slytherin was founded by Salazar Slytherin and corresponds to the water element among the four elements.

The Sorting Hat, when sorting into Ravenclaw, probes the recesses of a student's mind for the spark of wisdom and the insatiable desire to unravel the mysteries of the world. It seeks individuals who not only value knowledge but are driven to expand the boundaries of magical understanding. For those of us that hold a great interest in architecture and design, the Design Sight (read as “two-one two-one design sight”) behind Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown building is certainly worth a visit. This private design museum, Japan’s first, opened in 2007 and was intended first of all as a tribute to past achievements of Japan in the area of (industrial, architectural, environmental and fashion) design. Secondly, it should also function as a beacon of inspiration on how to approach future endeavors from a design and aesthetic point of view.

Morgan, Walls & Clements, 1929Though Morgan, Walls & Clements’ iconic Richfield Oil Tower was demolished in the name of progress, their similarly designed black-and-gold (albeit much smaller) office space still stands. The high contrast facade is the most striking feature, but so too are the deco adornments throughout the building’s interior. John and Donald Parkinson, 1930 This graceful structure from architects John and Donald Parkinson immediately draws the eye upward. Its most distinctive feature is its gothic tower—you’ll have a head-on view from atop Perch—but the details are decidedly deco. Although it's debatable what makes a piece of architecture significant or interesting, the structures included here are interesting due to their visual impact, historic significance, and accessibility to the public. Throughout the year they hold rotating exhibitions devoted to the theme of “everyday life” as well as educational programs like talks and workshops. In the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, amidst the modern skyline, stands the iconic Design Sight Museum, a testament to the brilliance of renowned architect Tadao Ando. This architectural marvel is more than just a museum; it’s a fusion of design, functionality, and innovation. Let’s delve into the intricate details of this exceptional structure that has left an indelible mark on the world of architecture.
Set on the edge of Midtown Garden, which is located in the Tokyo Midtown complex, a large portion of the gallery space is underground. The idea for the roof as one sheet of folded steel was inspired by Issey Miyake's A-POC "A Piece of Cloth" concept. This exhibition employs a tool called "Future Compass" to trigger ideas about the future. We use it to visualize perspectives on a future which is already present today, and which can be uncovered through our contemporary behavior and creativity. We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and researchers, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown.

Indeed, it required highly advanced techniques to process the 54 meter-long plate of steel used as the roof. This project would not have succeeded without the skills and techniques offered by all the craftsmen involved in its construction. People on the site bravely tackled the difficulties inherent in accommodating the requirements of the design without any compromise. I hope it will act as a center to inspire even higher levels of designs and spread them around the world. And of course, facilities will not be serving their purposes without the people who come and use them.

Before that, Japan was known as the Edo period, when samurai ruled the country, people wore kimonos and wooden one-storey buildings were the norm. ‘We live surrounded by a diversity of designs, but we ask how many of them deserve the title of The Original. This exhibition calls attention to products created with genuine verve, fundamental charm, purity, boldness, and strength, each of which we call The Original,’ explained Takahiro Tsuchida. The museum embodies Ando’s signature architectural style, characterized by clean lines, geometric precision, and a focus on spatial experience.
Additionally, content such as tours and tickets, hotels and apartments are commercial content. Co-directed by graphic designer Taku Satoh, product designer Naoto Fukazawa, and fashion designer Issey Miyake, it’s run by three of the country’s biggest names in design, but accessible for even the most amateur of design fans. Sitting in the middle of Roppongi’s Midtown Garden, 21_21 Design Sight is a sleek, futuristic gallery and the home of new and groundbreaking design-centric exhibits. As more developments continue to bulldoze their way into Roppongi, the startling mix of old and new becomes increasingly complex. Strolling around the neighborhoods just west of Roppongi Hills will give you a sense of what the area felt like ten years ago.
Along with Miyake, the graphic designer Taku Satoh and the product designer Naoto Fukasawa acted as directors, and the three directors envisioned a space that would offer a fresh perspective on how to interpret and appreciate design. Claud Beelman, 1930As Broadway continues to bounce back, the Eastern Columbia Building stands as a reminder that the Downtown street has always been beautiful. The stunning Art Deco tower never seemed to make its way into L.A. Iconography, but since a major 2004 renovation, it’s become a beloved landmark for Angelenos.
Immerse yourself in the world of design, explore the curated exhibitions, and witness firsthand the transformative power of Tadao Ando’s visionary approach. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the choice of materials reflects Ando’s commitment to sustainability. Concrete, a durable and long-lasting material, aligns with the architect’s ethos of creating structures that stand the test of time. The museum’s facade not only tells a visual story but also underscores the importance of responsible material choices in contemporary architecture. Ando has prioritized accessibility, ensuring that the museum is well-connected to public transportation and pedestrian pathways. This intentional design choice fosters a sense of community engagement and invites people from all walks of life to partake in the world of design.
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is itself enhenced by synergy with those facilities in the area. Claud Beelman, 1931 Art Deco buildings washed in a coat of color were once the standard in L.A. But these days, Claud Beelman’s green terra cotta design for the Los Angeles Jewelry Center is one of the few remaining examples.
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT was named with our intention that it would be a venue which offers vision beyond 20/20 to see what is ahead. SIGHT is the sight essential to design perspective and observation. It is read as "two-one two-one design sight."21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has its own symbol, a plaque called "The Product Logo," made of a sheet of metal. The plate, inspired by a style of address display panel seen anywhere in Japan, indicates this facility as being a "place" of design.
The white honeycomb covering is suspended over the interior box, letting in natural light, but preventing direct sun exposure to the art within. ‘The Original’ doesn’t contain only products from the history of design, but also recent items created in the last two decades, equally well-known and treated as if they were always recognizable. In Roppongi, next to the Mori Art Museum, the Tokyo National Art Center and the Suntory Museum of Art, located in the garden of Tokyo Midtown, a complex created on the site of the former Defense agency, 21_21 Design Sight calls out to aesthetes. The facade of the Design Sight Museum is a study in architectural expression. Ando’s use of concrete, with its raw and textural qualities, adds a layer of authenticity to the exterior. The play of light and shadow on the concrete surface throughout the day enhances the visual impact, turning the facade into a dynamic element of the overall design.
21_21 Design Sight is one of the more restrained additions to the ongoing redevelopment of Roppongi, a thoughtful contemporary transition between the monolithic shopping utopia of the Tokyo Midtown complex and the low-rise residential areas that surround it. Furthermore, whereas its seamless steel roof and concrete walls could have made for a cold and overbearing interior, its trapezoidal spaces manage to be both futuristic and intimate. Despite seventy percent of the building being located below ground level, a large lightwell lets in natural light. Designed by architect Tadao Ando, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Nestled amidst a serene, open public space, seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings.
