In addition to exhibitions directed by designers, the institution also hosts a wide variety of design-focused activities such as talks and workshops. Our aim is to promote understanding and interest in design by involving designers, company people, engineers, craftsmen, and the general public. Tokyo Midtown was created to be the center of design culture in Japan, driven by facilities including 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Suntory Museum of Art and Tokyo Midtown Design Hub. Nearby Tokyo Midtown is home to The National Art Center, Tokyo, Mori Art Museum, the design-themed complex AXIS, architecture specialist TOTO Gallery-MA and a number of design offices.

For those of us that hold a great interest in architecture and design, the Design Sight (read as “two-one two-one design sight”) behind Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown building is certainly worth a visit. This private design museum, Japan’s first, opened in 2007 and was intended first of all as a tribute to past achievements of Japan in the area of (industrial, architectural, environmental and fashion) design. Secondly, it should also function as a beacon of inspiration on how to approach future endeavors from a design and aesthetic point of view.

The Gamble House by Greene and Greene

The 1931 structure features multiple setbacks that stack up into a classic, sately appearance, aside from the 1980s addition of greenhouses—which are due to be converted back to open air patios. Make sure to look up toward the reliefs and ceiling of the entrance rotunda, and step inside the lobby to find a majestic mix of different types of marble. Building Connections: The Integral Role of Architecture in Human Existence and Community

Morgan, Walls & Clements, 1929Though Morgan, Walls & Clements’ iconic Richfield Oil Tower was demolished in the name of progress, their similarly designed black-and-gold (albeit much smaller) office space still stands. The high contrast facade is the most striking feature, but so too are the deco adornments throughout the building’s interior. John and Donald Parkinson, 1930 This graceful structure from architects John and Donald Parkinson immediately draws the eye upward. Its most distinctive feature is its gothic tower—you’ll have a head-on view from atop Perch—but the details are decidedly deco. The Cinerama Dome (6360 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood) was designed as a prototype for what was supposed to be a series of dome cinemas around the country, based on R.

Although it's debatable what makes a piece of architecture significant or interesting, the structures included here are interesting due to their visual impact, historic significance, and accessibility to the public. Throughout the year they hold rotating exhibitions devoted to the theme of “everyday life” as well as educational programs like talks and workshops. In the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, amidst the modern skyline, stands the iconic Design Sight Museum, a testament to the brilliance of renowned architect Tadao Ando. This architectural marvel is more than just a museum; it’s a fusion of design, functionality, and innovation. Let’s delve into the intricate details of this exceptional structure that has left an indelible mark on the world of architecture.

Set on the edge of Midtown Garden, which is located in the Tokyo Midtown complex, a large portion of the gallery space is underground. The idea for the roof as one sheet of folded steel was inspired by Issey Miyake's A-POC "A Piece of Cloth" concept. This exhibition employs a tool called "Future Compass" to trigger ideas about the future. We use it to visualize perspectives on a future which is already present today, and which can be uncovered through our contemporary behavior and creativity. We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and researchers, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown.

Indeed, it required highly advanced techniques to process the 54 meter-long plate of steel used as the roof. This project would not have succeeded without the skills and techniques offered by all the craftsmen involved in its construction. People on the site bravely tackled the difficulties inherent in accommodating the requirements of the design without any compromise. I hope it will act as a center to inspire even higher levels of designs and spread them around the world. And of course, facilities will not be serving their purposes without the people who come and use them.

Before that, Japan was known as the Edo period, when samurai ruled the country, people wore kimonos and wooden one-storey buildings were the norm. ‘We live surrounded by a diversity of designs, but we ask how many of them deserve the title of The Original. This exhibition calls attention to products created with genuine verve, fundamental charm, purity, boldness, and strength, each of which we call The Original,’ explained Takahiro Tsuchida. The museum embodies Ando’s signature architectural style, characterized by clean lines, geometric precision, and a focus on spatial experience.

Additionally, content such as tours and tickets, hotels and apartments are commercial content. Co-directed by graphic designer Taku Satoh, product designer Naoto Fukazawa, and fashion designer Issey Miyake, it’s run by three of the country’s biggest names in design, but accessible for even the most amateur of design fans. Sitting in the middle of Roppongi’s Midtown Garden, 21_21 Design Sight is a sleek, futuristic gallery and the home of new and groundbreaking design-centric exhibits. As more developments continue to bulldoze their way into Roppongi, the startling mix of old and new becomes increasingly complex. Strolling around the neighborhoods just west of Roppongi Hills will give you a sense of what the area felt like ten years ago.

Along with Miyake, the graphic designer Taku Satoh and the product designer Naoto Fukasawa acted as directors, and the three directors envisioned a space that would offer a fresh perspective on how to interpret and appreciate design. Claud Beelman, 1930As Broadway continues to bounce back, the Eastern Columbia Building stands as a reminder that the Downtown street has always been beautiful. The stunning Art Deco tower never seemed to make its way into L.A. Iconography, but since a major 2004 renovation, it’s become a beloved landmark for Angelenos.

Immerse yourself in the world of design, explore the curated exhibitions, and witness firsthand the transformative power of Tadao Ando’s visionary approach. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the choice of materials reflects Ando’s commitment to sustainability. Concrete, a durable and long-lasting material, aligns with the architect’s ethos of creating structures that stand the test of time. The museum’s facade not only tells a visual story but also underscores the importance of responsible material choices in contemporary architecture. Ando has prioritized accessibility, ensuring that the museum is well-connected to public transportation and pedestrian pathways. This intentional design choice fosters a sense of community engagement and invites people from all walks of life to partake in the world of design.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is itself enhenced by synergy with those facilities in the area. Claud Beelman, 1931 Art Deco buildings washed in a coat of color were once the standard in L.A. But these days, Claud Beelman’s green terra cotta design for the Los Angeles Jewelry Center is one of the few remaining examples.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT was named with our intention that it would be a venue which offers vision beyond 20/20 to see what is ahead. SIGHT is the sight essential to design perspective and observation. It is read as "two-one two-one design sight."21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has its own symbol, a plaque called "The Product Logo," made of a sheet of metal. The plate, inspired by a style of address display panel seen anywhere in Japan, indicates this facility as being a "place" of design.

The white honeycomb covering is suspended over the interior box, letting in natural light, but preventing direct sun exposure to the art within. ‘The Original’ doesn’t contain only products from the history of design, but also recent items created in the last two decades, equally well-known and treated as if they were always recognizable. In Roppongi, next to the Mori Art Museum, the Tokyo National Art Center and the Suntory Museum of Art, located in the garden of Tokyo Midtown, a complex created on the site of the former Defense agency, 21_21 Design Sight calls out to aesthetes. The facade of the Design Sight Museum is a study in architectural expression. Ando’s use of concrete, with its raw and textural qualities, adds a layer of authenticity to the exterior. The play of light and shadow on the concrete surface throughout the day enhances the visual impact, turning the facade into a dynamic element of the overall design.
