21_21 Design Sight is one of the more restrained additions to the ongoing redevelopment of Roppongi, a thoughtful contemporary transition between the monolithic shopping utopia of the Tokyo Midtown complex and the low-rise residential areas that surround it. Furthermore, whereas its seamless steel roof and concrete walls could have made for a cold and overbearing interior, its trapezoidal spaces manage to be both futuristic and intimate. Despite seventy percent of the building being located below ground level, a large lightwell lets in natural light. Designed by architect Tadao Ando, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Nestled amidst a serene, open public space, seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings.

Working for the design firm of Meyer and Holler, Kennedy never gained the prominence of some of LA's better-known architects. Kennedy's architectural influence continued in a different direction when he became a professor of architectural design at the University of Southern California. His own architectural projects were as diverse as designing movie sets and working as a consultant for the design of the Pentagon in Washington DC. You can't really get a good drive by view of the Getty Center on it's hilltop perch in Brentwood. Right next to the Disney Concert Hall is The Broad, which opened in 2015. You have to get up close to really appreciate the "veil and vault" concept of architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
It is one of the most recognizable structures in the city.At night, the blinking light on top of the 13-story tower spells out the word "Hollywood" in Morse code. This tour invite you to some of the notable modern architectures in Tokyo. Modernisation is seen as having begun after the Meiji Restoration of 1867.
The turquoise finish, terra cotta sunburst over the entrance and the blue glow of the clock tower are all headturners. High-end department stores have dwindled, Westlake is no longer the lap of luxury and the copper turret on the Bullocks Wilshire has since tarnished green—but none of that diminishes the elegance of this Art Deco landmark. It was a department store built for the car, and even though its cash registers have been shut for two decades (now it’s a law school), its poise and strong vertical lines still catch motorists’ eyes. When Richard Neutra's wife Dione dies in 1990, she left the house to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, which administers the house as a museum. From featured interviews to design resources, we've got plenty of inspo for you to soak up.

Select architecture students from USC get to live in the house as part of an architect in residence program. Los Angeles is full of beautiful Craftsman houses, but the Gamble House in Pasadena, designed inside and out by brothers Charles and Henry Greene is the cream of the crop. The house was built in 1908 as a summer house for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter and Gamble Company. The house incorporates Japanese elements into a Swiss chalet framework using craftsman techniques. Every detail in the house from the peg wood paneling to the stained glass windows was designed by the brothers, with Charles being responsible for more of the interior details. The purpose of the space and its rotating exhibits is to shine a new, inquisitive light on the design consideration and detail behind everyday items and events.
The Design Sight Museum is not merely a display space but a hub for creativity and design exploration. The building serves as a platform for exhibitions, workshops, and events that celebrate the diverse facets of design. From industrial design to interactive installations, the museum’s typology caters to a broad spectrum of design disciplines. In 2001, Tokyo Midtown began its transformation when Mitsui Fudosan and its partners acquired the former Japan Defense Agency site, focusing on “Design” as its core theme. Influenced by Issey Miyake’s 2003 article advocating for a Japanese design museum, a concept he had shared with Tadao Ando since the 1980s, the project evolved to an interactive space for public engagement in design culture. This evolution led to the opening of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in March 2007, a significant addition to Tokyo’s cultural scene.
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is situated in the heart of Tokyo Midtown, a vibrant and modern district in the Roppongi area of Tokyo, known for its blend of art, culture, and night life. This area serves as a cultural hotspot, boasting a plethora of attractions beyond the institution. Visitors can explore the Roppongi Hills, a skyscraper complex that combines shops, restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, and the Mori Art Museum, renowned for its contemporary art exhibitions. The National Art Center, Tokyo, another architectural marvel, is nearby, offering an ever-changing lineup of exhibitions. The joy of creation is transmitted in this modern venue, which is completely anchored in the twenty-first century.
